Thought for the Day 4/24/06
What country are we in again?….
the 5th of May or Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, and is a very important day in Mexican history. It represents a great victory with regards to Mexican independence. I am very happy for the Mexican people.
We are not in Mexico. Why is the government of the United States of America allowing a Mexican holiday to be celebrated so openly in the U.S.? Is the 4th of July celebrated in Mexico… How about President’s Day? I am not saying July 4th, or President’s Day is more important than Cinco de Mayo. To the people of the two countries, they are all equally important to the person who has the national heritage to match the holiday. We as Americans are loosing our national heritage. We have allowed the encroachment of other cultures to the point where another country’s holidays and traditions are more important than our own. Are we so afraid of offending a foreign country that we sacrifice our culture and heritage to be tolerant?

I think we should celebrate my great-great grandmas (the Cherokee Indian) birthday as a national holiday. Makes sense to me….she was here FIRST!

Oh please, America’s national heritage is largely defined through our immigrants. But, if you are so worried about the erosion of American culture, the greater menace to me would seem to be the much more popular and equaly foreing celebrating of St. Patricks day.
Just accept this as a symbol of Americas open multiculturalism (one of its most important aspects) and find something else to gripe about.
